24/7 Emergency Service
Coventry Scaffolding have been successfully providing this service for over 35 years and during that time, it has formed a large part of their business, providing scaffolding both for access and support in emergency situations.

This service has been called into to action on many occasions but particularly following gas explosions, large fires and of course bomb explosions. In this respect, Coventry Scaffolding are probably the most experienced contractor with regard to bomb damaged buildings, being called into action on numerous occasions during the IRA’s attacks on the capital.

One of the earliest such occasions came in 1970 when a bomb blast ripped through the Post Office Tower hundreds of feet in the air. That left a mass of dangerously loose debris hanging over the streets of London which had to be dealt with immediately. Unfortunately, due to the design of the tower, conventional scaffolding wasn’t an option, so Coventry suspended a cradle rig high above the streets to enable Firemen to cut the debris away. All was well until the Firemen refused to get into the cradle leaving one of Coventry’s own men to volunteer to do the job. In jumped Benny Watts who whilst holding on with one hand, cut the debris away using a simple hacksaw with the other. Benny, now retired but still one of Coventry’s longest servicing employees, was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1972 by Her Majesty The Queen for his efforts.

Coventry’s emergency service has also been called into action on virtually every other IRA bomb explosion in London, most notably at the Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Hall, and probably most infamous of all, the Baltic Exchange bomb where a mass of scaffolding had to be erected in a very short space of time to ensure the City of London got back to some sense of normality as quickly as possible.

These are the most well known examples of our work but this service has been used on hundreds of other occasions following large fires, gas explosions and even on other contractor’s scaffolding following high winds or poor workmanship!

If you have an emergency requirement for scaffolding call Coventry Scaffolding!
